Combination Approach is Best for Smoothing Lip Lines

Combination Approach is Best for Smoothing Lip Lines

“Those pesky little lines around my mouth.” That’s how many of our patients describe tiny wrinkles that form around lip edges and above their upper lip. They’re often referred to as “smoker’s lines” but you can get them even if you’ve never smoked a day in your life. That’s because “smoker’s lines” are not caused by cigarettes but rather by our daily habits and expressions, such as pursing our lips, smiling, laughing, eating and sipping through a straw. Other factors can contribute to lip lines as well, such as environmental exposure, cold, wind, UV rays and etc…

Why Treat Lip Lines?

Aside from not loving their appearance, lip lines can make the application of make up a little difficult – if not frustrating. They can cause foundation to collect in the creases or your favourite lip stick can bleed and look messy. What worse, if left untreated, lips lines tend to get deeper and more pronounced over time. Fortunately, we have some effective non-surgical techniques to smooth lip lines and make them much less noticeable. All it takes is a few visits to your cosmetic doctor for your lipstick to stay put and for your make up to look fresher, longer.

What is a Combination Approach to Treating Lip Lines?

Many cosmetic practitioners will simply fill your lips lines with dermal filler and call it a day. There’s nothing particularly wrong with this method other than it requires frequent and expensive upkeep. That’s because dermal filler breaks down the fastest in areas of dynamic movement, such as your lips. For this reason, we believe that a more comprehensive approach is necessary to produce longlasting and visible results that make patients happy.

At Brockville MediSpa we believe that simply filling in the tiny wrinkles with hyaluronic acid is a band-aid approach. It does very little to address the problem – which is primarily the breakdown of your natural fat and collagen. Instead, we recommend a longer-lasting solution to treat lip lines, one that works from the inside-out by boosting your skin’s natural collagen. We have the best results with combining treatments such as multipolar radiofrequency (RF) and microneedling treatments, to improve dermal quality and build up the skin’s “scaffolding.” In the long term, replenishing your natural collagen increases epidermal thickness and plumpness, making lips lines much less apparent.

Dermal Fillers and BOTOX® for Lip Line Maintenance

Once you’ve achieved a certain level of correction with collagen-boosting modalities, dermal fillers and neuromodulators like BOTOX® can be used to fine-tune and prolong the results. We love using Juvederm® Volite® around the lips to boost hydration levels and smooth the skin. Volite® doesn’t add any volume to your lips but it does plump up fine lines and helps your skin retain moisture for up to eight months. If you’ve been considering a subtle lip enhancement done at the same time we recommend Juvederm® Volbella® to gently build volume and give your lips definition. Juvederm® Volift® can be very useful to help lift the corners of the mouth.

Another indication for BOTOX that many people don’t know about is using it to relax the muscles around the mouth. The same muscles that we use to talk, laugh and sip wine also cause “those pesky lip lines.” A few units of BOTOX is all it takes to smooth the area and results last for a few months. We recommend BOTOX alongside a muscle-relaxing skin serum called TMR by Vivier to keep your lip area smooth and wrinkle-free for longer.
