The Confidence Crush: What Is Crushing Your Confidence?
self-con·fi·dence noun
a feeling of trust in one’s abilities, qualities, and judgment
At the Brockville MediSpa, I am always amazed about how many women will answer my question “What are the three things that bother you most when looking into the mirror?” with “I don’t, I avoid the mirror as much as possible because I hate seeing my frown lines, or wrinkles, or enlarged pores etc.”. They hate looking in the mirror so much that they make a conscious effort to avoid mirrors? Really?
Let’s be clear. These are all beautiful women. I yet have to see a woman that is not beautiful. You might not be perfect, but you have a striking smile or beautiful eyes, or an amazing skin. Or an enviable athletic body, or beautiful toned legs. But their is often that one thing that undermines your confidence and self esteem. I call it your “THING”
Women and men, that come to see me, are interested in cosmetic dermatology to fix this one “main thing” that bothers them, would it be frown lines (the ugly 11’s), acne scarring, deep wrinkles or enlarged pores etc.
SO WHY DO PATIENTS CHOOSE COSMETIC DERMATOLOGY?
Studies tell us it is not because they want to change the way they look- it is because they want to change they way that they look at THEMSELVES and how they feel bout THEMSELVES. Have you ever been told “you are perfect the way you are” but that is not how you feel. With cosmetic procedures you’re potentially trying to fix something that you don’t like about yourself to help you feel that little bit better about yourself
CAN BOTOX AFFECT SELF- ESTEEM?
If you are considering a cosmetic procedure you may be happy to know that new research actually reveals that Cosmetic Procedures do boost self confidence. One such study done by Dr. Steven Dayan, a researcher, wanted to find out if treatments like BOTOX® could actually impact the way people look at themselves. The objective was simple: “To determine the effects that [botulinum toxin type A] injections for the treatment of facial wrinkles had on quality of life … and self-esteem. Participants also completed questionnaires which looked at factors such as satisfaction, self-esteem and quality of life. What did they find? The results may surprise you.” Among those who completed the surveys, researchers found that “Increases in overall self-esteem and appearance-, social-, and performance-related self-esteem were observed in participants treated with botulinum toxin type A
WILL YOU HAVE THE SAME RESULTS?
This study certainly shed some light on the power and impact of cosmetic skin treatments. Cosmetic procedures can often help you feel that little bit better about yourself, when you’re potentially trying to fix something that you don’t like about yourself.
