Sunscreen is like a lot of other things- it only works when you use it!  In fact, a study by L’Oréal Paris and the Melanoma Research Alliance found that 52 percent of American women grade themselves a C or lower on their sun-care habits. Here are a few fun facts as well as suggestions for non sunscreen sun protection options.

#1 Don’t be duped by the SPF number.

The difference between SPF30 and 50 is very minimal-97% versus 98% of UVB protection! New regulation in the making suggests that sunscreen can only be labeled SPF50+. It is more important to check you label to ensure your sunscreen provides broad spectrum protection. That means blocking both UVA and UVB rays.

#2 Chemical or chemical free sunscreens?

If you prefer a chemical free sunscreen go with a physical sunblock that contains zinc oxide. Zinc oxide provides both UVA and UVB coverage but can be thicker and can leave a white residue on the skin. However, both EltaMD and Vivier now have sunscreens with transparent zinc oxide that glides on for a better look and feel.

 #3 Give it time.

Chemical sunscreens need to be applied at least 20 minutes before you go outside to give them enough time to absorb while physical sun blocks such as Zinc and Titanium need less time, since they sit on the surface of your skin.

#4 Cover it all!

The backs of your hands, the tops of your feet, your ears, and the back of your neck are all areas that are easily forgotten and the prime areas where skin cancers show up later in life.

.#5 Take it all off before applying sunscreen.

The best time to apply sunscreen is before you put your bathing suit or your golf clothes on. That makes it easier to reach all the areas. Let it dry for a few minutes before you get dressed to avoid sunscreen on your clothes.

#6 Reapply, reapply, reapply!

Keep an eye on the clock and reapply at least every 2 hours and if you are in the water or sweating, every 20 minutes. Use common sense and err on the safe side! Use that cell phone timer to remind you when it is time to reapply!


#7 What if sunscreen makes you look  “ashy”?

Consider a tinted sunscreen if you look “ashy” with sunscreen. ELTA MD has several tinted broad spectrum sunscreens with transparent zinc oxide for the perfect look.

#8 What about sunscreen and Vit D?

Sunscreen prevents sunburn by blocking UVB light. Theoretically, that means sunscreen use lowers vitamin D levels. But as a practical matter, very few people put on enough sunscreen to block all UVB light, or they use sunscreen irregularly, so sunscreen’s effects on vitamin D might not be that important. An Australian study that’s often cited showed no difference in vitamin D between adults randomly assigned to use sunscreen one summer and those assigned a placebo cream.

I hate sunscreen. What other options do I have?
