ASK DR. STEYN
Dear Dr. Steyn,
I’m approaching my 60’s and I’m starting to notice a “turkey neck” situation happening under my chin. I’m not interested in surgery at this point in my life but I’m wondering if skin-tightening or some other treatment can help. Thank you, Georgia.
Dear Georgia,
Thank you for your question.
Your concern is quite common here at the clinic. As we age, the effects of gravity coupled with loss of collagen and fat causes our skin to sag and develop into a “turkey neck” just as you describe. If you’re not interested in surgery right now then there are some excellent minimally-invasive options that can firm up the neck and give your lower face a more youthful profile.
The most popular treatment we have for tightening and firming the skin is Tribella Facial Rejuvenation. TriBella combines three powerful devices – Radiofrequency Skin Tightening, RF Microneedling and IPL – to lift, firm and smooth the skin. We generally recommend a series of 3-5 sessions spaced four weeks apart for optimum results.
After we’ve achieved the desired level tightening with Tribella, we can use dermal filler such as Juvederm VOLUX and VOLUMA to augment the lower face even more. These high-tech dermal fillers can be placed along the jawline and/or chin to mimic bone, essentially restructuring and giving support to sagging skin. The fillers offer additional lifting, firming and wrinkle reduction that works synergistically with Tribella.
Do keep in mind that although non-surgical rejuvenation can improve sagging skin and lift facial contours, it’s not an alternative to cosmetic surgery. I tell all my patients to keep a realistic outlook about what can be achieved with dermal fillers and skin-tightening technologies. To learn more about our non-surgical treatments we invite you to book a consultation with Dr. Steyn.
